Our WelleCo co-founder Elle Macpherson spoke to The Grace Tales about business, babies and parenting.
Elle Macpherson is definitely a morning person. The model-turned-mogul wakes at 5.30am to meditate before the rest of her Miami-based household even stirs.
“I like quiet time in the morning,” says the age-defying beauty. “I do my best to stick to my ritual of meditation and introspection wherever I am; it could be 10 minutes or as long as 40 minutes - it sets the tone for the day and the routine is reassuring.”
Now 52, the Sydney-born mother, who loves nothing more than fresh air, sunshine, good food and a daily swim in the sea, has learnt that balance is the secret to looking and feeling good. Her children come first, business ventures second – Elle has two sons Cy and Flynn with first husband Arpad Busson and three step children with her second husband, billionaire developer Jeffrey Soffer. “I'm always at the end of the phone for advice (like recently - how to get a ketchup stain out of a winter coat!)” she says. Social media is even scheduled into her day so she doesn’t waste time scrolling, and she always ensures she gets at least seven hours sleep. “I believe that a healthy body and a balanced life comes from love, laughter, water and good nutrition,” she explains.
“A few years ago, despite my best efforts, I started feeling run-down,” she explains. “I tried an array of supplements and lifestyle changes but nothing worked. That’s when I met Dr Simone Laubscher, Ph.D., as she put it, my body was ‘working overtime, all the time’. She told me to get rid of all the synthetic supplements and replace it with whole food supplements and adopt an alkaline diet (basically plant-based). It made me realize what a profound impact food can have on the way I feel.”
She is happier now than she has ever been – we couldn’t wait to find out why.
What is your definition of success?
When I was younger I probably defined success by covers of magazines or income earned etc. Today I believe it is navigating the ups and downs of life and still keeping a sense of faith and humour.
What has been the most challenging part of motherhood?
During the early years I found it difficult to find time for myself. I remember getting my exercise by throwing the boys in the pram with some breakfast and going for a run. I made mistakes along the way. They were patient with me! Now I have one in middle school, and one in college - they are more independent but still look for guidance and encouragement from their parents. One of my biggest privileges is also being a stepparent to my husband's three children.
How do you juggle family with work?
Aha! Now that's the challenge! Keeping it simple - kids and family first - work follows.
How did you handle sleep deprivation when your boys were little?
Coffee (not the best answer but it worked for a while), and I think I just tried to take each day at a time.
How did you moderate your boys’ social media use?
My eldest had Facebook when he was younger as he set it up as an alias because I wouldn't let him have an account - cheeky monkey, I found out about a year later. My youngest at 14 still doesn't have one (as far as I know). I encourage all the kids to be responsible on Instagram.
