ELLE’S GUIDE TO GORGEOUS HAIR

We tap her power products, tip and tricks for seriously good hair

WelleCo (W): Great hair is important to you.

Elle Macpherson (EM): Yes definitely. I feel my hair influences my face and a good cut and colour changes everything.

W: What was your hair like growing up?

EM: I’ve always worn it long, even when I was younger. My mum used to threaten to cut it off if I behaved inappropriately at all. As a child, I wore a fringe. Mum used to cut it but it wasn’t always straight much to my horror!

W: There’s a strong heritability factor in our hair.  What have you inherited and from whom?

EM: Well Dad’s hair is thinning and Mum has a rich full head of hair, so hopefully I take after Mum.

W: Did you experiment with your hair as a teen? Henna? Sun-in?

EM: I remember putting Sun-In in my hair when I was 18 right before a Sports Illustrated shoot. It turned orange! I was mortified.

W: Has anyone ever asked you to cut your hair for a shoot?

EM: I once wore a wig for a Paris Vogue shoot. It was a pixie style that I loved. I’ve never had the courage to cut all my hair off. Maybe I’ll just borrow a wig!

W: Any major hair disasters?

EM: I’ve had plenty of hair mishaps, like getting hair stuck in a brush while blow drying. So much so that Ihad to cut it out of the brush. And once I got chewing gum stuck in a huge clump of hair - another cutting out operation! I then had to cut the other side of my head to match the shorter hair. It wasn’t a good year while that grew out.

W: When did you start to really look after your hair?

EM: I’ve always tried to look after my hair using modern products and a few old-fashioned ones like washing it in vinegar or beer for extra shine. My work means I’m often in front of the camera, so clear and vibrant skin, thick healthy hair and beautiful nails are imperative. The SUPER ELIXIR is a fantastic foundation for hair, skin and nail health, and we wanted to supercharge its benefits even more. Made with botanical extracts and nutrients, Aquatic Collagen Skin + Hair + Nails SUPER BOOSTER supports collagen formation and enhances skin firmness and strength as well as maintain overall health. It is the perfect ‘boost’ for my daily SUPER ELIXIR, smoothie or simply dissolved in water. It is a brilliant addition to the WelleCo range.

W: Any changes in your hair you have you noticed as you’ve got older?

EM: I’m fortunate I have no grey - I think this is largely to do with my diet, state of wellbeing and genetics. My hair specialist Josh Wood specialises in grey hair management and has formulated incredible products for people to look after it at home. Fortunately, I don’t need them yet but know where I would go if grey became my norm. Josh makes sure my hair suits my skin tone and uses his expertise and experience to guide me. He has been advising me for years and keeps my hair looking polished and modern which for me means lots of texture and volume. When my hair feels flat or lacklustre, I increase my daily dose of the SUPER ELIXIR Greens and do a 7 day course of Aquatic Collagen Skin + Hair + Nails SUPER BOOSTER. They work synergistically to strengthen hair, improve sheen, growth and texture.

W: Any favourite hair care products?

EM: I absolutely love Sam McKnight hair products, especially Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo and Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist. They’re the best products on the market and I love their packaging, simplicity, and efficacy. They smell delicious too. I shampoo and condition every two to three days, and I usually air-dry my hair because I'm not very skilled with a blow-dryer! Also, it’s great to give hair a rest and of course there is no need to waste environmental energy using a hair dryer unnecessarily. Once I’ve washed it, I put it up into a 'knot' on top of my head. When I take it down I get sort of a messy wave. When I go swimming, I'll slather on a hair mask, then put on a swim cap. And in the summer, I often walk around with wet-looking hair that has a treatment in it. I believe that keeps it healthy.

W: If you’re having a bad hair day, what do you do?

EM: I like a good beach spray to create some texture which is so important when you have highlights and lowlights as I do. Any of Sam’s products are great for creating texture. I simply spritz it through the crown, mid lengths and ends or throw hair upside down and spritz liberally into roots.

W: What’s your favourite hair look when you need to get dressed up?

EM: I love sexy polished hair - not too wavy but enough to have some movement.

I would love to be able to pull it all back off my face - but it doesn’t suit me, it’s a look I envy for evening.
